Mélanie Bonis

Suite en Trio, Op. 59 (1903) for flute, violin and piano

Mélanie Hélène Bonis is a female French late-Romantic composer. As her parents discouraged her from learning music, she self-taught piano before the age of 12. Later, she was introduced to César Franck, who granted her special permission to enter a all-male Paris Conservatory. She studied with Claude Debussy and Gabriel Pierné.

The Trio Suite, Op. 59 for flute, violin and piano was composed in 1903. The work starts with a melancholic Sérénade as an introduction of a series of ideas which are later developed. Then it was followed by a calming Pastorale, featuring interchanges between flute and violin, and ending with a canon of these two instruments. Lastly, the lively Scherzo is in contrast to the two previous movements, which is more dramatic in whole.
