Gabriel Fauré
Trio in D minor, Op. 120 (1923) for clarinet, cello and piano
​The Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120 by Gabriel Fauré was composed in 1923, just a year before Fauré's death, and is considered one of his last great works. The opening of the trio starts with a melancholic piano accompaniment, followed by the lyrical melody played by the cello. The clarinet then enters to build a passionate climax. Throughout the piece, Fauré's exquisite harmonies and masterful use of counterpoint create a rich and complex tapestry of sound that is both emotionally stirring and intellectually satisfying.
Fung Cheuk Yan
Piano
Fung Cheuk Yan is a year 3 undergraduate student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying composition with Professor Chan Kai Young and Lo Hau Man. She also studied with pianist Mary Mei Loc Wu and Poon Kiu Tung. She started to play piano at the age of 10, and passed the performance diploma ATCL in 2019 with distinction. Her latest ensemble performances include Rachmaninoff’s piano trio in G minor, and Brahma’s clarinet trio in A minor.
Apart from her achievements in piano playing, she has also developed proficiency in composing. On behalf of her secondary school, she won the Best Creative Ideas Prize (Silver Award) and Outstanding Music Prize of Gala Musica School Creative Works in 2018 and 2020 respectively. She is also the sound designer in United College Drama Club since 2020, who composes music and designs the sound effects for theatrical productions.
Ng Hou Yin Matthew
Cello
Ng Hou Yin Matthew is a year 1 undergraduate student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong He studied Dizi with Wai shing fat and chu boon chong. And also minored cello under Cheung Ming Yeun. He started to play dizi at the age of 6, and passed dizi grade 9 examination with merit in 2016 and passed the cello grade eight examination with distinction in 2017.
Chan Ka Ying Hayley
Clarinet
Chan Ka Ying Hayley is currently a year 2 music student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, majoring in clarinet under the tutelage of Michael Campbell and had also studied with Lorenzo Antonio Iosco and Fong To.
Hayley started learning the clarinet at the age of six. She had have masterclasses with Andrew Simon, Chris Swann and Florent Heau. She had also been invited to join an online clarinet choir with Nicolas Baldeyrou and clarinetists from different countries.
As a clarinetist, Hayley is now currently playing in the Chung Chi Wind Orchestra, the Hong Kong Symphonic Band, and the Cyber Symphonic Winds, and she has played in the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra as principal clarinetist. She had also played as a guest player in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University SAO Philharmonic Orchestra.
